The headline is technically accurate. Ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz jumped 392% in 14 days. UKMTO logged 39 full transits in the week to August 7. Then 151. Then 192 in the week to August 21.

The context makes it less impressive. Before the war, 20.9 million barrels a day moved through that strait. Today the strait is running at under half its pre-war norm by the most optimistic estimate. By some analysts it is closer to a third. The 400% gain is real. It is also a recovery from almost nothing back to slightly more than almost nothing.

That gap is what Monday is actually pricing.

The Dark Ships Problem

The UKMTO count tracks vessels by their transponders. In a war zone, captains switch them off.

Windward, a maritime data firm, recorded nine ships crossing the southern corridor dark on the night of August 21. The largest single night on record. So part of the 400% increase is not new ships arriving. It is old ships turning their signals back on. The count went up faster than the cargo.

The diesel crack spread tells the same story from the other direction. The margin refiners earn turning crude into diesel hit an all-time high of $102.20 on August 17. In normal times it sits in the teens. That spread is not what you see when supply is recovering normally. It is what you see when refined fuel is genuinely tight regardless of what the transit count shows.

What Monday Actually Opens With

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called a Monday press conference to unveil new Iran sanctions. Mohsen Rezaei, who runs Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, has already warned that Tehran will strike at the interests of any country that participates.

WTI closed Friday at $87.57. Brent at $92.40. Both are sitting just below the descending trendline drawn from the May highs. Brent has already breached its line. WTI is a fraction beneath its own.

Sanctions restrict supply. That argues for higher prices not lower ones unless the package lands softer than expected or carries a signal that talks are quietly resuming. The oil market opens Sunday evening in New York. By Monday morning the sanctions language will be public and traders will have their first chance to price it.

Trump complicated the picture further on Friday. Speaking in South Carolina he said: “We don’t even know if we won, because I view the Strait of Hormuz as an American territory right now.”

A US president claiming sovereign interest over a waterway Iran has been charging tolls on since February is not the language of a conflict winding down. It is the language of a conflict whose terms are still being written.

What This Means for Bitcoin

Bitcoin has tracked the Iran conflict at every major inflection point since February. Oil above $100 kept inflation elevated and kept the Fed frozen. The recent rally to $78,000 came partly on hopes that the strait reopening would bring oil back toward $75 to $80 and give Warsh room to soften his language.

If Monday’s sanctions push Brent back above $95, that rate cut narrative gets complicated again. The chain that trapped Bitcoin below $82,000 for three months, closed strait feeding oil above $100 feeding inflation feeding Fed paralysis, has not fully broken. It has just loosened.

A 400% surge in ship traffic that still leaves the strait running at 10% of normal is not a reopening. It is a negotiation in progress. Monday will show which direction that negotiation is moving.
